Tips to keep the water tank cool during the hot weather

Pakistan is among the countries, where storing water in tanks installed on the rooftops of the buildings. The stored water in tanks is ten supplied to the entire house through pipes. During the summer season, the temperature rises as well as the day time increases. During the summer season, the water tank installed on the rooftop of the house remains exposed to the sunlight throughout the day. As a result, the temperature of the water in the tank increases. Due to the increase in temperature, we can’t use the water directly through taps. A temporary solution to the problem is that pour the hot tap water in a bucket & let it cool off for a few minutes before using it for washing clothes, cleaning, watering plants, bathing, etc. This solution is time consuming & you can’t use this method if you have to use water throughout the day for house chores. Tips to keep the water tank cool during summer

Let’s take a look at the following useful ways to keep the water tank cool during the hot weather.

  • Installed the water tank in an enclosed space
  • Paint your water tank white
  • Insulate all your water supply pipes

Installed the water tank in an enclosed space

Sunlight is the biggest problem & cause of the rise in temperature of the water present in the water tank. So, it is better to relocate the position of your water tank. It is recommended to install the water tank in the enclosed space of your rooftop. This is one of the best & easiest tips to keep your water tank cool during the hot weather. You can also construct an enclosed concrete space on your rooftop & then install the water tank in that enclosed space.

You can also install a shady place for a water tank if you don’t want to put some extra efforts by installing the enclosed concrete space. Both methods will not only keep the water tank cool but also protects the material of the water tank from the harsh weather as the tanks are mostly made from materials like fiberglass & plastic.

These materials degraded when exposed to direct sunlight. However, you are willing to install a shady place or ready to construct an enclosed concrete space, you have to ask for permission from the authorities because the major cities of Pakistan like Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore follow very strict construction laws. And if you didn’t ask for permission before constructing you will be charged with a fine. So, it is best to take permission before installing & constructing extra space that is not available on the approved map.      

Paint your water tank white

One of the most effective ways to keep the water in your water tank cool during hot weather is to paint it white or any other like color, e.g: pink, blue. It is a proven fact that light-colored surfaces reflect more light while dark-colored surfaces absorb more heat & light.

If you paint your water tank in a light color, the absorption of heat during summer decreases. So, it is recommended to paint your water tank in light colors from outside & inside. The light color paint does not also help in maintaining the water temperature but also stops the growth of bacteria & algae within the container. If you want the paint to last longer, give your water tank the right color. A person usually makes the wrong choice when it comes to painting the water tank. People use water-based paint in the case of the concrete water tank which is the wrong choice. Water-based paints failed to bear the rough condition of the rooftop. If you want the paint to last longer, use pure exterior acrylic paints.    

Insulate all your water supply pipes

If you want to maintain the water temperature of the pipe along with the water tank, you should also have to insulate all the water supply pipes of your home. It will not only help in maintaining the water temperature during summer but also will keep it from freezing during the winter season, especially if you live in cold regions of the country. You can insulate the water supply pipes of your homes in the following ways:

  • Maximize the use of wall insulation. This insulation technique has become a part of common construction strategies these days; this technique helps to protect the water supply pipes form the harsh outdoor environment.  
  • Insulate the gaps where water supply pipes enter or exit the walls. Blocking these gaps will help in keeping the temperature of the water the same in the winter & summer season.
  • Use pipe wrap strips. It is considered a traditional way to insulate the water pipes.
  • Install foam pipe sleeves. Foam sleeves are easily available in the market. The pipe sleeves are also made of rubber insulation material.
